Get Back Up and Keep Trying: A Spina Bifida Story

Spina Bifida (SB)

Ashley Spicer

Don't Give Up

Once upon a time there was a little girl who couldn't walk. She crawled around the house or used a stroller/wheelchair to get around where she needed to go. Eventually she started using RGO's (walking braces) to get around and improve her overall health. It wasn't exactly the same since she could only stay in those braces for a certain amount of time each day, but she still managed to stay positive and keep up with it. As time went on she continued to keep going until high school came along. Her health was taking a turn for the worst and everything start crumbling down little by little. This girl was upset. Very upset. She thought all her hard work over the years have been flushed down the toilet and it was all for nothing.

There were many times she almost gave up completely until there was a glimmer of hope at the end of that tunnel. Since she was growing up and her body was changing, it was difficult for her to keep walking in those braces. Her body just wouldn't allow it anymore, but there was another way she could still continue to do what she wanted but in a different way. She started using a stander. This way her body was still in the standing position like the braces, it's just more in a "work out" kind of way as she called it. Just because you grow out of something, doesn't mean you have to stop doing it all together. You can try finding other ways to do it.

That girl I was talking about in this story is me. Just because life knocks you down unexpectedly and puts a permanent stop on something you've been doing basically your whole life, doesn't mean you have to throw in the towel and quit. If you keep on trying hard and find other alternatives you can get a lot further in life. Get back up and show life what you are truly made of. You got this.
