My name is Dionte Christian. I was born with cerebral palsy, but I have never let that hold me back.
When I was 9 years old, I lived through an unfortunate and shocking event. My biological father tried to kill me, while my mom was shopping at Walgreens. He cut my neck, from ear to ear, but my mom came back just in time. When she found me I was laying in a pool of my own blood on the kitchen floor and the last thing I remember is telling my mom that I was going to be okay. When I woke up I was in the hospital, but I did not let even this event stop me. I went back to school 3 weeks later.
When I became a teenager I started to drink and smoke trying to fit in because I just wanted to be happy. That was the wrong choice, I see it now because I started drinking for the next 12 years. Now I am 31 and I finally got my life together. Things still get hard sometimes however, I always find a way to push through. I am a better person today because of everything that happened. I took a decision once to go to rehab and today I’m four months and six days sober. I give thanks to my higher power for allowing those things to happen, because now in my life I always remember my life is what I make it.
I want to live because life is not bad or good, life is an opportunity. I want to live because I want to have a wife and kids one day, a family of my own. I want to live because I can help a lot of other people by sharing my story. My story is powerful, I pulled through a lot and I could be the voice for others who feel they don't have the power.
