Austin’s Story

Here is the Reader’s Digest version. Because truthfully, there is a lot to our story. Austin is 4. At 15 months he had a freak accident and got a TBI. At his neurologist appointment check-up in January 2020, he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. He got genetic testing done as well then and we learned that he has 16p 11.2 deletion syndrome. He was referred to a geneticist. He was already in school and getting therapy for his TBI, but after his autism diagnosis, we knew where to focus to help him. He’s made a lot of progress. He can now say over 100 words and even a few short sentences. He is still behind developmentally and there are some tasks that he cannot do just yet. But we don’t care. We know that they will come with time. We treat Austin just like our other son who is neurotypical. We just give Austin more time to do something. I share about our daily life, all the ups and downs, and everything that comes with being a boy mom.
