My Life- SCI story
Hello, I am Maria. I am 22 years old. I had a very serious car accident. My friends and I wanted to go for a drink, but never managed to reach our destination. I sat in the back seat of the car when the girl who was driving lost control. We were doing circles and hit a tree. I lost consiousness and was very hurt. I don't remember anything until I woke up in the hospital. I just wanted the bad dream to be over. One moment is enough to change your life. When I was in the hospital, the doctors tried to save me. My condition was very serious; I had blood on my head and broke my jaw. My throat and spinal cord were also injured. I was hospitalized for six months.
The Doctor
When the doctor told me that I would need to use a wheelchair, the feelings I experienced were not nice. I felt anger and sadness and often cried. I knew I could not be self-sufficient in a wheelchair and would always need a helper. However, in those months I learned many things. It took me quite a while to learn how to get back on my own, but I did it. If there is a will then all things can be done. I am a wheelchair user and I am not jealous of those who walk.
The Continuation
What I was going through was very difficult. Through this experience, I developed a stronger social self-confidence. It made me happy that I had my family and my friends next to me and I am thankful for them. Nevertheless, I did not stop hoping for the best. I believe in myself and I always try to smile. I feel very happy now and I live every day knowing that I have a long life ahead of me. I am not afraid!
