The journey of an incredible girl with mild CP

Our story with mild CP

3 years ago, in mid-april, I met my best friend for the first time in person. This was the day I gave birth to my Abigail! I was a stay at home mom, dedicating all of my time and love to my sweet, little girl. When she turned a year old, I started to notice Abigail's delay. She had JUST started crawling, but more like an army crawl. Her pediatrician brushed this off, I was told that she will move when she is ready. At a little over a year and a half old, Abigail began to consitently crawl on her hands and knees. At two years old, she finally started to pull herself up to standing. At this point, I knew something was off. Her pediatrician was finally taking notice and we started getting referred all over the place. The eye doctor, the ear doctor, the orthopedic surgeon, the neurologists.

The reason why we are here today

After a few rough visits and a lot of tears, my husband contacted a doctor at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital who he had communications with through work. We are so thankful to have found Mt. Washington, they are the reason why we are where we are today! Abigail participates in outpatient physical, occupational, and speech therapy at Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital weeky. She is seen by one of their wonderful developmentalist every 6 months. A few days after Abigail's most recent developmentalist appointment, her doctor pulled me aside during Abby's PT session, to tell me Abigail's diagnosis. All of a sudden it hit us, Abigail was not just delayed, she is physically disabled. Abigail wears AFO braces for stability and to keep her from hyperextending at her knee. She now walks with a Kaye walker, which we have for her to use at home. In therapy she is working on strengthing through riding the bike and various activities, as well as, continuing to progress to walking independently by using two crutches. July will be a very big month for Abigail. She has a neuorologist appointment, her first MRI scheduled, and another developmentalist appointment at the end of the month. Abigail is so eager to walk independently and we are going to do everything in our power to get her there!
