End of a Life and Beginning of Another: SCI story

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)

Thobias Thornéus

My SCI Journey

Hi my name is Thobias and I'm from Sweden. 19 years ago I was 25 and full of life. I trained in martial arts and was a very active young man. Everything changed one night in January when I fell. When I got to the hospital, the doctor got me in to surgery very quickly. But after 4 hours they had to stop because I lost so much blood.

I now have two titanium rods in my back, but the pain was indescribable. After another week, the doctor asked me if I wanted do do another surgery so I could get rid of the pain. I instantly said yes. I woke up 10 hours later and the pain was gone. I now had four rods and a vertebra made from titanium.

After about 2 months, the reality got me that I was 25 and could never walk again. I fell into a black hole. But slowly, I started to climb up again. Today my life looks nothing like I though it would be like. Today I feel that everything happens for a reason. I have a beautiful son that is 6 and I work as a driving instructor. I'm the only one in Sweden thats in a wheelchair. I have a nice appartment and a good life. Like I said, everything happens for a reason. And every bad thing that has happend to me over the years has only made me stronger because after every setback comes an even stronger and greater comeback.
