Studying to be a Doctor While Being a Patient

Rare Disease & Syndrome

Claudia Martinez

I will become a doctor one day

I'm Claudia Martinez, a second year medical student at McGovern Medical School in Houston, Texas. While studying to be a doctor I have been a patient. I was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation, Syringomyelia, Brainstem Tethering and Hydrocephalus. I've had 6 brain surgeries, 3 feeding tube surgeries and suffered a stroke to my brainstem leaving me as an incomplete tetraplegic. I was unable to function from the neck down. I had to relearn how to feed, bathe, dress myself and how to walk again. Despite this I have continued on my journey of becoming a doctor and hope to inspire others to never give up on their dreams.
