Integration of My Disability in Society: Muscular Dystrophy

My goal is to raise awareness about disabilities and bring positive light to people living with Muscular Dystrophy

I was born with muscular dystrophy (myopathy undefined). Neverthelss, I did not allow my physical condition to place a limit on myself to not be able to enjoy the sweetnesses that life has to offer. By the age of 12, I was still able to walk with crutches or other devices, but the transition from sixth to seventh grade of primary school presented as a large burden for me that forced me to move to wheelchair permanently.

I attended a regular primary school near Ljubljana. When I was deciding upon a middle school, most schools did not have the necessary adaptations to suite my disability needs so I had to join a secondary school at the Institute for traning of disabled youth.

There were disabled as well as non-disabled teenagers in the class. It was really nice and filled with many very special people. That was actually the time when I first started to associate with disabled children, that I haven't had a chance to associate much with in the past. As I was always interested in people, society and working with people, I decided to study at the Faculty of Social Work. I also successfully compleated the studies.

I am employed at the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Slovenia, where I am leader of special social programs. Like most people, I like travel, go to the cinema, disco, and generally like to have fun with friends. I like to take on various projects with an aim to raise awareness of the problems which disabled people face in everyday life and projects that show people with disabilities and disability (including people with MD in this case) in the positive light - to highlight their skills and vision and break the stereotypes strongly rooted into the society.
